Chalked Sidewalks and Painted Walls

Of all the lights in the streets

these flicker like warnings,

messages from the kind of people

who keep trying to teach me something

but all I seem to care about anymore

are the lessons I have to learn myself.

I think I was raised

on 2nd hand information,

like the points were now dull

and the stories had grown so high

that the buildings began to suffer

from all the bodies

impacting their sidewalks

where illegal artists spray portraits

over the dying bricks.
