Needed Change

It’s in my blood to drink,
this long line of Irish tempers
and empty glasses
where raised fists
were always raised for the wrong bar fight reasons.
I can hear the grandparents I never knew,
telling me
they told me so
and looking at me through my parents pictures,
saying
“your bones are just waiting to break,
just waiting to lose balance
while they walk to where you’re going
and your lungs want to breathe something
other than fire,
so drink something other than the liquid you’re drinking”
